A six-year-old Moreno Valley boy is recovering after a dog attack on Tuesday that partially severed his ear.
According to KTLA, Maria Juarez was walking with her six-year-old son Ruben and another child when a 120-lb bull mastiff escaped from a yard and attacked them. The attack occurred around 11:40 a.m. near the intersection of Indian and Myers Avenues.
The dog bit the back of the boy's head and tore off part of his ear. He was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors were able to reattach the ear. He was reportedly released Tuesday evening following the incident.
The boy's mother also sustained bite wounds in the attack but the younger child, who was in a stroller at the time, was apparently unharmed. Moreno Valley animal control officers were eventually able to subdue the dog and have placed it under a ten-day quarantine. After the quarantine period ends, the animal will be euthanized. The dog's owners were cited but it is unclear whether any criminal charges will be sought in the case.
Fortunately, it appears the victims of the vicious dog attack will fully recover from their injuries. Even though most dog attacks only last a few minutes, that brief amount of time can result in devastating physical and emotional wounds. Hopefully, the victims will consult an experienced personal injury attorney to determine whether they will be able to recover monetary damages from the dog's owners for their medical bills and pain and suffering.
Individuals who have been injured in a dog attack need to understand their legal rights, especially if the dog owner's negligence contributed to the incident.
