L.A. County Animal Control Quarantines Dog After Fatal Mauling
Los Angeles County animal control officers have quarantined a pit bull that fatally mauled another dog and also attacked the dog's owner.
According to police, the dog attack occurred Tuesday evening on Summer Grove Place in North Valencia. Sheriff's deputies have not speculated on what caused the animal to viciously maul another dog but believe that the dog's owner suffered dog bites as a result of trying to rescue his pet.
The dog that initiated the attack has since been placed under quarantine. In most cases, dogs are held under quarantine for a period of ten days after which they are either given back to their owners, placed for adoption or euthanized. Animal control officials have yet to determine which outcome is most likely in this case but it does not seem probable that the dog will be adopted.
The Santa Clarita Sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the events surrounding the fatal dog attack. At this time, no criminal charges are pending against the pit bull's owner and it is unclear if anyone will be charged in connection with the incident.
It is also unclear whether the owner of the dog that was killed will seek civil damages for the loss of his pet and the injuries he sustained. While the wounds he incurred were not life-threatening, he may face some significant medical bills if he lacked sufficient insurance to cover his expenses.
Under California law, he could possibly file a personal injury lawsuit against the pit bull's owner to recover these costs. Hopefully, he will contact an experienced dog bite attorney to discuss his claim.
