The 3-year-old boy suffered serious injuries following the pit bull attack.

A three-year-old boy has been hospitalized with severe injuries following a vicious dog attack involving a pit bull.

According to police reports, the pit bull attack took place early Monday evening in the boy's Royalty Avenue home. The boy was apparently playing by himself in the living room when someone opened a patio door leading to the home's back yard. The open door allowed the family's 50-lb pet pit bull "Smokey" to enter the home, where he reportedly headed straight for the boy, initiating a savage attack. Witnesses say the attack began without warning or provocation on the part of the child.

Family members were eventually able to fight the dog off and remove him from the home. The boy was airlifted to a Fresno hospital, where he underwent reconstructive surgery for severe injuries to his face, including the partial loss of one eye. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

The dog's owners have since surrendered the pit bull to Merced County Animal Control, where he is scheduled to be euthanized. According to reports, the dog's licensing and vaccinations were not up-to-date at the time of the attack.

While there is no official police record of any similar incidents involving the pit bull, other family members have since reported that the dog had previously tried to attack another child in the home.

No charges are expected to be filed in the case against the dog's owners.

The young victim in this case unfortunately faces a long road to recovery that could require even more surgery and extensive hospitalization. While the boy's parents are likely facing a significant amount of medical bills, they should count themselves lucky that the dog did not injure or kill another child in the neighborhood. Had that occurred, they would likely be facing a personal injury lawsuit seeking compensation for injuries caused by the dog attack.
