3 Pit Bulls Kill 42 Goats at Lake Los Angeles
Four pit bulls jumped a fence and killed 42 goats in a vicious dog attack near Lake Los Angeles.
According to Los Angeles County Animal Control, the attack occurred Monday night at a property near the intersection of 164th Street East and Avenue Q in Lake Los Angeles. The four pit bulls mauled dozens of goats that were enclosed in a pen. Forty-two of the animals either died of their injuries or had to be put down. Animal Control officers believe the dogs were overcome by a pack mentality which lead to the frenzied attack.
When authorities responded to the scene, they found two of the dogs still inside the pen with a third standing nearby. None of the dogs were wearing collars and it was later found that none of them were microchipped. Authorities are also unsure if the dogs' vaccinations were up-to-date, leading to fears surrounding the potential spread of rabies. The three pit bulls remain impounded at the Lancaster Animal Care Center. Authorities have not yet specified whether the dogs will be euthanized.
A fourth pit bull that was spotted in the area remains at large but it is unclear if the dog was involved in the attack. Animal control has set up a ten-day patrol in the area and is urging all residents to avoid unfamiliar dogs. Anyone with information about the dogs involved in the attack should contact the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control at 661-974-8358.
While the dogs involved in this incident fortunately did not attack a human, millions of people are the victims of dog attacks each year. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that nearly 4.7 million Americans suffer a dog bite annually, with the majority of attacks involving young children. In 2010, there 34 deaths caused by a dog attack. Approximately 1/3 of all dog attack fatalities annually are attributed to pit bulls.
If you or someone you love has suffered serious injury or death as a result of a vicious dog attack, you need to know your rights. Under California law, dog owners who negligently allow their pets to attack someone can be held liable in both criminal and civil court. Victims of dog attacks and their families can seek damages against careless dog owners to pay for medical bills, lost wages, funeral expenses and pain and suffering.
