Huntington Beach Police Kill Charging Pit Bull
Huntington Beach police reportedly shot and killed a 100-pound pit bull after attempting to enter a mobile home.
According to police, two officers and an investigator from the city attorney's office went to the Ocean View Estates mobile home park to investigate a report about squatters in one of the residences. They knocked on the door of the mobile home and after receiving no response, entered the residence through an open window.
Upon entering the home, the pit bull reportedly charged the officers who then shot the animal in an effort to ward off an attack. The dog, which belonged to Casey Conger, son of the mobile home's owner, was killed instantly. Huntington Beach police were apparently already familiar with the dog and claim it had attacked another officer during a previous incident in which Conger was arrested.
Police have not stated where the inaccurate report about squatters came from. It is unclear whether Mr. Conger will seek reimbursement for the loss of his dog.
While it is unfortunate that the pit bull was killed, the dog's prior history suggests that it may have posed a threat to public safety if provoked. Had his dog succeeded in attacking the police officers or bitten another person, Mr. Conger may have faced criminal charges. In addition, the dog bite victims may have sought to file a personal injury claim against him to seek damages for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
Pit bulls generally account for approximately 2/3 of all dog attacks are involved in the majority of incidents leading to the death of the dog bite victim. Of the seven fatal dog attacks occurring in California in 2010, six of them involved pit bulls.
