Sacramento Pit Bull Attack Leaves Two Injured
A nine-year-old boy was seriously injured and an elderly woman was also hurt in a pit bull attack in a Sacramento neighborhood over the weekend.
According to CBS Sacramento, sheriff's deputies responded to a call at the 7000 block of Third Parkway around 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning and found a woman and her grandson had been seriously injured. The boy had a head wound and severe injuries to his arm while the grandmother's bite wounds were less than severe.
A neighbor reportedly heard a commotion in the backyard of the residence and found the pit bull attacking the boy. The neighbor had to pry the dog's jaws off the boy's arm to free him. Both the boy and his grandmother were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to sheriff's deputies, the woman had been house-sitting at the residence, where the dog was kept in the backyard. The boy apparently went into the backyard and the dog began attacking. After responding to the call, deputies noticed that the dog was acting aggressively and attempting to jump over the fence into a neighboring yard. Fearing the pit bull would attack others, deputies shot and killed the dog.
Sacramento Animal Control officers took custody of the deceased dog as well as another dog that was inside the home. There are currently no criminal charges pending in connection with the attack.
No word has been reported on what responsibility the owner of the pit bull may bear in causing the victims' injuries. If an investigation determines that the dog's owners acted negligently in allowing a dangerous dog on their premises, the victim may be able to seek monetary damages for the injuries she and her grandson sustained.
While they likely face a long road to recovery, they are fortunate that their injuries were not more severe. According to Dogsbite.org, pit bulls were responsible for 71% of fatal dog attacks occurring in 2011. Four fatal dog attacks occurred in California and all four involved pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
