Many Dog Bite Claims Result In Payments From The Dog Bite Owners Insurance
A startling statistic is that more than 1/3 of all homeowner's insurance claims in this country involve a dog bite by the family dog. Unfortunately, and unfairly, more and more insurance companies are denying coverage or explicitly excluding dog bite claims for particular "dangerous" breeds.
Thus far, we have compiled below the list of dog breeds which most insurance companies consider dangerous. These breeds are as follows:
- Pit bulls
- Doberman Pinchers
- Staffordshire Terriers
- Rottweiler
- Chow
- Akida
- German Shepherd
- Siberian Husky
- Alaskan Malamute
The insurance companies are also considering excluding any mix involving these breeds.
Our information is that AAA will not write a homeowner's insurance policy if one of the above breeds is in the family home.
We're beginning to see dog bite liability coverage in which the coverage includes the cost of injury to a third party caused by a dog bite. If a homeowner could obtain such a policy it usually is canceled after an incident of even a single bite or even after a complaint concerning the dog.
We are against this trend, as we believe that dog breeds are not aggressive in and of themselves. It is the manner in which the owners train their dogs.
