Certain Dog Breeds That Insurance Companies Will Not Insure
All dog owners should know that many homeowner insurance carriers policies have blacklisted certain breeds of dogs. They have excluded from homeowners’ liability dog bite coverage certain dog breeds. It is therefore imperative for you as a homeowner to review your homeowner policy to determine which if any breeds are blacklisted. We have seen this on certain California Homeowner Policies. As a result, there is no homeowner insurance coverage available if a blacklisted breed dog injures a person. Blacklisted breeds include Pit Bull type dogs, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Akitas and other dogs that have been bred for dog fighting such as the Japanese Tosa and the Staffordshire Terrier.
The "Coalition for Living Safely With Dogs" completed a long term statistical study in Colorado of the types of breeds that bite people. Most dog bites were from Labrador Retrievers, followed by Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Chows.
It is also important to remember that most pet-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms occur when a person is walking their dog and the dog suddenly pulls its owner down because the dog charges towards another animal.
Interestingly, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the ban in the Province of Ontario on Pit Bulls. In other words, the Canadian province of Ontario bans all Pit Bulls. The Ontario Court ruled that Pit Bulls are dangerous and unpredictable dogs that have a propensity to attack without warning. There is no such governmental ban on Pit Bulls in America. Such ban’s have been overruled by American courts.
Part of our investigation on every dog bite case is to learn about the dog breed’s behavioral characteristics, including its vicious nature, dangerous proclivities, behavioral capabilities, was provocation involved in the incident, and whether or not misconductwasinvolved by the dog’s owner causing the dog’s behavior.

Dog Aggression, Sources and Releases
Wikipedia’s entry on dog attacks list sources of aggression that many adoption agencies test for:
- Dominance
- Fear and Self-Defense
- Territoriality and Possessions
- Predatory Instincts
- Pain and/or Sickness
- Redirected Aggression
The sources of aggression find releases through dog bites in common occurrences such as surprising a sleeping dog, stranger being on ‘their territory’ or the removal of food, water or other item that is currently comforting the animal, such as a chew toy. Dog aggression is released for numerous other reasons as well but often times strong emotions or feelings such as fear, hunger or pain elicit reaction from even the most docile animals.
Unsupervised Children with New Dogs Often Fall Victim to Dog Bites / Attacks
A one-year-old child in Tennessee fell victim to the new family pet. The mother of the child told newschannel9.com “they'd gotten a dog, a 4 year Great Dane the day before” and “the dog was used to fighting for his food in his former home, and probably thought her daughter was trying to take it.” The mother was answering the door at the time of the incident.
The child was rushed to the hospital after the dog bites, “where she went through surgery and got more than 60 stitches.” All of this was the result from this brief lapse in supervision.
